Capturing Moments, Illuminating Stories
Images should tell a story, a story that makes you wonder. We all see things through the prism of our individual character and experiences, so the story in the image will be different for each of us. Wouter van Solinge has a good eye to find these extraordinary moments hidden within the everyday.
By day, he leads the Department of Laboratory Medicine at an academic hospital in the Netherlands. In his parallel world, he is a self-taught photographer, energized by wandering the streets in search of unguarded moments in life or collaborating with models in a way that scratches beneath the surface.
His journey began at age 12, sparked by the Dutch television series Q & Q and the quiet brilliance of André Kertész. Since then, photography has remained a vital constant—through collecting photobooks, visiting exhibitions and, above all, the act of image-making itself.
Van Solinge’s artistic eye—shaped by cinematic and photographic influences such as Antonioni’s Blow-Up, Peter Lindbergh, Elliott Erwitt, and Anton Corbijn—has matured into something distinctly his own. Whether interacting with a model to create a portrait in the studio or observing the fleeting interactions of strangers, his images are defined by a tension between a bold clarity and quiet ambiguity. He works exclusively in black and white—not for what it omits, but for what it reveals.
This autumn, Wouter will publish his first photobook: Situations—a curated selection of 94 black-and-white photographs spanning five decades. It’s a visual journey through everyday life, seen through the eyes of an artist. To learn more click here.

Experiences
“Through your lens you took me to a completely different world. Black and white but more colorful than I’ve ever seen. Mysterious, artistic and surreal. Serendipity at work…..” Serendib.
“Thank you @woutervansolinge for these “impressions”. More important than the images (which blew me away!), working with you to create them was an enriching experience. Your approach to portraiture is respectful, striking, and inspirational.” Christiana.
“Being good friends, it was exciting to decide to do a photoshoot with Wouter. Working with Wouter was fun, as expected! But moreover, it was inspiring to see Wouter from a different side, professional and creative, in deep concentration, looking for the best shots in a safe environment. It led to great pictures!” Valerie.
